Trip to New Jersey[]

Slater and Jon Osterman go to an amusement park in New Jersey on a double date with Wally Weaver. A photographer takes a picture of them. That night, they make love for the first time.[2]

Intrinsic Field Experiment Accident[]

A month later, Slater witnesses the incident in which Jon Osterman, who intended to pick up his watch, was accidentally locked in the Intrinsic Field Test Chamber before an experiment. While Osterman begs for Slater to stay with him, she is unable to watch and leaves. Osterman is disintegrated and a token funeral service is held. Slater places the photograph of her and Osterman at the amusement park behind glass at the Bestiary.[2]

Doomed Relationship[]

When Jon Osterman returned as Doctor Manhattan, he and Slater resume their relationship. They spend that Christmas together, and she buys him a golden ring. Hearing that he only admires its atomic structure, not the object itself, she admits that she is scared of him and all the things that has changed about him. He assures her that he will always want her, knowing full well of their relationship's doomed fate.[2]

Watchmen Meeting[]

In 1966, Slater accompanies him to the first Watchmen meeting, where he first meets Laurie Jupiter. She is annoyed, noticing the obvious attraction between them.[2]

Breaking Up[]

Slater leaves him when she discovers that a relationship had been building between Osterman and Juspeczyk, throwing away the earrings he had given her. His disinterest in Slater was simply due to her beginning to grow too old for him, as he had ceased aging many years ago. Crying, she packed her things carelessly and left him.[2]

Cancer[]

Due to her past association with Osterman, Adrian Veidt takes her in at Dimensional Developments to work as a physicist. Unknown to her, Veidt infected her as well as Wally Weaver and Edgar Jacobi with a high dose of radiation by installing a radiation tank in the ventilation system of where she worked. She is eventually diagnosed with cancer and is given six months to live.[2]

Confronting Doctor Manhattan[]

After learning that she has cancer, she is contacted by Nova Express and bitterly shares her experience with Osterman to Doug Roth. Slater attends Ted Koppel's talk show "Face to Face" to tell Jon that he was the cause of her cancer and subsequent misery, screaming "God damn you!" at him before leaving.[2]
